  16. 21 May 2008 at 6:23pm
I know that they are an alternative medicine type doctor, and that they can't write prescriptions, which for a doctor sounds a little suspicious to me, but wondered specifically what a chiropractor doctor believed about diabetes control? Do they believe/ support insulin for treatment or have the belief that diabetes can be controlled with back adjustments and a better diet?

  20. 20 May 2008 at 4:03pm
I use Reactine, but i cant swallow tablets. Its not that i think i cant is that i try really hard and i set my mind, but it just stays on my tongue, even if i try throwing it far back. I tryed crushing it and dissolving it, doesnt work. i tried it in jello, yogurt and other things, doesnt work. I really need an alternative. Is there like a chewable seasonal allergy medicine or liquid version. I use to take liquid Reactine but that was because i was under 13 and its for kids, but now im almost 15 and the tablets dont go down. By the way this is seasonal allergies. 23. Voting Question: alternative medicine for dogs?
  24. 19 May 2008 at 6:48pm
I have asked this question once before but was hoping to get a few more oppinions as this seems to be one of the most active times at this site I was wondering what your oppinion is of alternative medicine for dogs such as accupuncture, massage, etc. Do you feel it is viable or a load of crap?? Has anyone ever had any experience with it, if so what was your and your dogs experience? I never really thought about it until a vet tech friend of mine told me about how her dogs back legs were paralized before I knew her... I never in a million years would have guessed based on how well her dog moves! well she said that while the vets couldn;t seem to help at all, after trying regular accupunture it slowly got better... It got me wondering, was it the accupuncture or could it have just been time I am especially interested if you have ever actually tried it- accupuncture in particular... what were the results, how did the dog react during treatment, etc. thanks!

  25. Resolved Question: What are your responses to this article?
  26. 19 May 2008 at 6:08pm
"...death from behavior problems is the leading cause of pet mortality." by Nicholas Dodman, Director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and author of the books The Dog Who Loved Too Much and The Cat Who Cried for Help. When we think of pets, we tend to conjure up warm and friendly images: new puppies cavorting together, kittens playing with a ball of twine, a parakeet sitting on its owner's finger singing sweet nothings into its owner's ear, a faithful Retriever at its master's side. It's this warm and fuzzy side of pet ownership, plus the unconditional companionship that pets provide, that helps forge the strong bond that often exists between people and their pets. Unfortunately, though, there's another side to pet ownership that we don't hear so much about; what happens when pets do not live up to our expectations of them and the bond between the owner and the pet weakens or completely breaks down. Behavior problems are almost invariably the reason behind this rift. Some owners simply suffer the adversity and soldier on. Others would seek help but do not know where to find it. Yet another group surrenders their pet to the local shelter or pound on the off chance that it will be adopted. This solves their problem with the pet -- but not the pet's problem -- and no one learns from the experience. There is an old Swedish proverb that says, "Some people make the same mistake a thousand times and call it experience." That certainly applies here, as some of the same owners simply obtain another pet and repeat the cycle of ignorance. Many of the pets brought to shelters are surrendered there because of behavior problems that their owners believe to be permanent. Approximately 70 percent of these animals end up being "put to sleep," making death from behavior problems the leading cause of pet mortality, ahead of trauma and disease. It is estimated that between five and 10 million dogs and cats come to an untimely end in the nation's shelters and pounds each year - a veritable holocaust. To put these figures into perspective, at least three times as many dogs are destroyed annually because of behavior problems as die of cancer, another leading cause of death. With dogs and cats, the problems range from aggression and house soiling to fear and anxiety-based conditions, including various compulsive behaviors. A similar spectrum of conditions plagues small mammals, birds and even reptiles, although figures on the morbidity and mortality that these problems cause in these species is presently lacking. So what causes these problems and what can be done about them? The cause, I am afraid to say, in one way or another is us, the pet owners and pet breeders. Many of the problems we experience with our pets are normal species-typical behaviors that are inconvenient for us or occur in an inappropriate setting, such as urine marking or furniture scratching in cats. Other problems are exaggerated versions of normal behaviors that have been accentuated by indiscriminate breeding practices. A final group of behavior problems is inadvertently engineered by us. We often do not appreciate or understand the importance of environmental and social experiences on the development of behavior, or we interact inappropriately with our pets, sending incorrect signals of leadership and understanding. For example, a dog growls and snaps at a stranger. Its owner, in an attempt to calm the dog, pets the dog and speaks soothingly to it. The dog, however, interprets this petting and soothing as praise, thereby reinforcing its aggressive behavior. Fortunately, it is often not too late to intervene and rectify at least the majority of these problems. A little understanding goes an awfully long way. To understand what behaviors to expect from a particular type of pet, what drives these behaviors, and how to re-direct them resolves many of the species-typical behavior problems. It is also helpful to attend to the pet's psychological and physical needs through attention to exercise, diet, and various environmental factors. Communication with the pet can be enhanced through modern non-confrontational training. Attention to species specific behavioral needs (such as a bloodhound's need to sniff or a sheep dog's need to herd) is a must. In addition, specific behavior modification practices can be of enormous value, in some cases augmented by targeted pharmacological therapies when genuine psychological problems are involved. Medical causes of behavior problems are becoming better understood and these problems must be diagnosed and treated appropriately if other strategies are to be successful. The bottom line is that now, at last, something can be done to correct most behavior problems. A new breed of veterinary and non-veterinary specialist has emerged to help advance the science of animal behavior studies and to educate others in the art. A number of referral centers have opened up in private practice and in academia. The clinical services they provide can and do help in dealing with hard-to-treat behavior problems. No longer is there no place to turn. There are very reasonable alternatives to euthanasia that are likely to meet with success, whatever species is involved. It is quite foreseeable that within a few years the currently overwhelming dilemma of animal behavior management will come under control - and not a moment too soon. The cavalry has arrived!

  29. Resolved Question: Too much prozac?
  30. 19 May 2008 at 12:36am
I'm not asking for medical advice, I am merely asking if I should be alarmed with OR seek other possible treatments from my doctor in regards to my pill consumption. I have severe OCD & Anxiety & PTSD & possibly borderline, my doctors up'ed me to 100mg of prozac a day. Within a short time I found myself consuming a bottle of pills for no known reason. So they gave me Zyprexa(5mg) and WellbutrinSR(300mg) and Klonopin(7.5mg) to counteract the side-effects of prozac. I've been hearing that I'm on an abnormally high dosage of prozac. I am wondering if I should be concerned with all this medicine I'm taking or does this sound normal? Possibly recommend some alternatives to talk with my doctor about?? I'm worried about the long-term effects of taking all this (the dependency, eventual tolerance, etc) and just wanted some opinions.

  31. Resolved Question: Best books for alternative veterinary medicine?
  32. 17 May 2008 at 3:05pm
Can anyone tell me what some of the best books on alternative (meaning holistic, homeopathic, organic, etc.) veterinary medicine are? I'm looking for books that cover natural feeding, use of supplements, and alternatives to conventional medicine in companion animals. I know there are a lot of informational sources out there, but I wanted to know what you would recommend. Websites, journals, magazines, articles, and books all welcome. Just tell me what you recommend and why!

  33. Resolved Question: Biodegradable cat litter?
  34. 17 May 2008 at 3:02pm
Alright, so I've read about it, read reviews about it, but I want you to tell me about it. I currently use Arm & Hammer Multi Cat Clumping litter, which works great! Minimal odors, clumps great, and I have never had the problem of my cat not using his litter box. But... I want to be more eco friendly. As an advocate of integrative alternative veterinary medicine, I feel as though I should find a litter that works as well as my clumping clay pollutant with all the advantages of the wheat/pine/corn based products on the market now. So tell me about your experiences with different cat litter or even automatic cat boxes. Swheat Scoop? Feline Pine? Yesterday's News? Worlds Best Cat Litter? With everyone natural feeding, is anyone out there using a natural cat litter? Or is clay still reigning supreme.

My question is, what alternatives are there to researching medicine and how do you know that is a safe way of doing things. Don't get me wrong, I'm for animal free products, just wondered what the 'alternatives' are.

  55. Resolved Question: Sebaceous cyst?
  56. 13 May 2008 at 7:53pm
Hi, I am 27 years old. I remember as far as 8-10 years back when I started having small, but numerous cysts on my scalp. They were harmless, said a doctor then. But over a number of years they have grown both in size and number. I have 9 big ones now. There has been sometime inflation on my scalp when a small one starts erupting, which would later grow big, obviously. And some of them have popped unknowingly until their presence has caused me headache when they have grown big in size. I am worried since the 10th cyst has started erupting. I have recently consulted a dermatologist. He says surgery can remove them but does not guarantee that it will not reoccur. Moreover, my hair fall has been much during the past few years and removing 10 cysts by surgery will leave me patchy on my head. Please help me if you know of any alternative medicine/therapy. Thanks in advance

  64. 12 May 2008 at 9:19pm

He's second time with medications is over now but unfortunately the stool is still not solid and its smell is overwhelming like it has always been... 70. 12 May 2008 at 9:57am
I'm in college and am 26. Obviously I am years behind, but I have two years to go. I have ADD and have had it since I was very little, but my parents never medicated me because they only believe in natural medicine (which I also do, but nothing has helped for ADD in terms of alternative medicine). I have been taking meds for two years which has helped a lot but right now I cannot get inspiration to do my homework. I take Dexedrine (ADD med) but I have grown a tolerance to it.. and have also grown a tolerance to Ritalin and Adderall. My homework is sitting right in front of me but I cant get it done, this is terrible, it is my dream to graduate college but I am always distracted by things, I just need a kick to get this going but I cant seem to find one.

  71. Resolved Question: A Question For Atheists?
  72. 12 May 2008 at 8:11am
I was wondering, since you guys don?t believe in a soul, how do you feel about some Alternative health and wellness techniques? For instance, Acupuncture is based heavily on the theory of Chi--universal life energy, or whatever. Acupuncture seems to work, but people in the West haven?t really figured out why. Anyway, what I was really wondering is, do you, or would you, make use of some Alternative medicine techniques? Or are Atheists strict Western Medicine advocates, with no use for Alternative medicine of any kind? If you would use alternative medicine, what types would you use? Reki? Massage? Essential Oils? Acupuncture? Also, how do you guys feel about meditation?

  76. 10 May 2008 at 11:47am
My hubby & I are frustrated about not being able to figure out what Butterscotch is allergic to, but she definitely has some sort of allergy. I found places that give dogs accupuncture for this (if you've tried them, let me know that, too). We're at our wits end. She's SO uncomfortable! Any information would be appreciated! Butterscotch is, and has always been,on California Natural food (herring & sweet potato formula). The vet said it shouldn't be the food, since this formula is specifically made to be allergy-free. Thanks so much for all of the input! Butterscotch is a German Shepherd/Black Lab mix, born 9-7-05. Her allergies began around her second b-day, and we had changed NOTHING in her diet, but treats. Now, she gets carrot slices only. She's been on so many meds & I'd hate to think of her medicated all of her life. We tried topical sprays to no avail. We may have to get grain free foods, from what it's sounding like. Please continue to advise me! Thanks!

  81. Resolved Question: canine peri-anal hernia?
  82. 10 May 2008 at 12:46am
Is there anyone on here who knows anything about veterinary medicine? I have a very small 10wk chihuahua that weighs just shy of a pound. She has a large peri-anal hernia. The vet said she is too small for surgery. But she has issues defecating. He said soft foods and fiber, lots of fluids. I also give her a few drops of prune juice once a day. She eats about a quarter of a teaspoon of canned Iams puppy food every 2-3 hours from 6am to 10pm. He suggested possible euthanasia due to the size of the rupture and the small size of the chihuahua if defecating continues to be such an issue. Is there any alternative? And how successful would a repair be on a very small dog? The vet didn't know if it would even be possible to net the hernia.

  85. Resolved Question: Why was my package handed over to customs (UK)?
  86. 9 May 2008 at 12:36pm
From time to time I buy things from China, from a guy I know. Last month he sent me some chinese "art tea"- nothing special, just normal tea which opens/uncurls in hot water. Last week I bought 3 special combs for lowering blood pressure (alternative medicine) for myself, my mother and my aunt. When tried to track my package with EMS, got this message: "package handed over to customs" . Checked tracing history for tea package- it was checked by customs also. I did not get any notice/letter with delivery last time. Does it mean they are "keeping an eye on me"??? Will I have to pay import charges on future packages? Is there a limit to the value of import per year? Could not find any info on their website. Would it help if I changed delivery address? Thank you, everybody.

Just wondered if anyone is having a similar experience in their life? and how they are finding the alternative medicine in fighting depression and anxiety. Thanks

  99. Resolved Question: Can an allergy to a medication (Vicodin) occur after the m...
  100. 7 May 2008 at 6:08pm
Greetings. I have been taking Vicodin (5 mg hydrocodone/ 500 APAP "tylenol") for about 2 months now due to a back injury endured in the military. About 1 week ago, I started getting itchy knees, but didn't think much of it. Well I ran out of medication for roughly 24 hours the other day, and when I took 2 vicodin, it felt like my troat was swelling up. O could still breathe ok, but it was uncomfortable. The itchiness got worse. I took a bath this morning and it turned my skin red. I have stopped using the medication and will be seeing a professional to get switched up for medication. How is it possible that I developed an allergy to a medication 2 months into taking it? What is a good alternative medicine? (please don't say NSAIDS because I have bad stomach issues from years of overusing them). And #3, for you medical savvy people, what is more likely to cuase the reaction, the APAP or the hydrocodone? Thanks in advance. My back thanks you too :0) Note: It was after going 24 hours, I got my refill, and it was only then taking the medication did my throat swell UPDATE - I was switched today from hydrocodone to codeine. This time I took benadryl with it. I didn't get much intchy skin like before, but I felt my airway narrow like I did from the hydrocodone. So it appears the histamines from both the hydrocodone and codeine cause a reaction in my system.< >
