  3. Resolved Question: Joke, just for laughs?
  4. 20 May 2008 at 7:36pm
First-year students at Texas A&M's Vet school were receiving their first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, 'In Veterinary Medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor: The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body. For an example, the Professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck it in his mouth. 'Go ahead and do the same thing,' he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns sticking a finger in the anal opening of the dead cow and sucking on it. When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, 'The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. 'Life's tough, it's even tougher if you're stupid.' No I didnt make the joke, but I love this one too!

  6. 19 May 2008 at 10:39pm
I'm a junior in high school and i'm going to apply to college in the fall. I intend to pursue a career as a veterinarian so I want to attend the same school for my undergraduate education and Vet School and University of Florida and Auburn are the closest. I hear that UF is cut-throat and the campus is huge and confusing. I intend on majoring in Zoology but I just want to know which one is best.

  7. Resolved Question: What are your responses to this article?
  8. 19 May 2008 at 6:08pm
"...death from behavior problems is the leading cause of pet mortality." by Nicholas Dodman, Director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and author of the books The Dog Who Loved Too Much and The Cat Who Cried for Help. When we think of pets, we tend to conjure up warm and friendly images: new puppies cavorting together, kittens playing with a ball of twine, a parakeet sitting on its owner's finger singing sweet nothings into its owner's ear, a faithful Retriever at its master's side. It's this warm and fuzzy side of pet ownership, plus the unconditional companionship that pets provide, that helps forge the strong bond that often exists between people and their pets. Unfortunately, though, there's another side to pet ownership that we don't hear so much about; what happens when pets do not live up to our expectations of them and the bond between the owner and the pet weakens or completely breaks down. Behavior problems are almost invariably the reason behind this rift. Some owners simply suffer the adversity and soldier on. Others would seek help but do not know where to find it. Yet another group surrenders their pet to the local shelter or pound on the off chance that it will be adopted. This solves their problem with the pet -- but not the pet's problem -- and no one learns from the experience. There is an old Swedish proverb that says, "Some people make the same mistake a thousand times and call it experience." That certainly applies here, as some of the same owners simply obtain another pet and repeat the cycle of ignorance. Many of the pets brought to shelters are surrendered there because of behavior problems that their owners believe to be permanent. Approximately 70 percent of these animals end up being "put to sleep," making death from behavior problems the leading cause of pet mortality, ahead of trauma and disease. It is estimated that between five and 10 million dogs and cats come to an untimely end in the nation's shelters and pounds each year - a veritable holocaust. To put these figures into perspective, at least three times as many dogs are destroyed annually because of behavior problems as die of cancer, another leading cause of death. With dogs and cats, the problems range from aggression and house soiling to fear and anxiety-based conditions, including various compulsive behaviors. A similar spectrum of conditions plagues small mammals, birds and even reptiles, although figures on the morbidity and mortality that these problems cause in these species is presently lacking. So what causes these problems and what can be done about them? The cause, I am afraid to say, in one way or another is us, the pet owners and pet breeders. Many of the problems we experience with our pets are normal species-typical behaviors that are inconvenient for us or occur in an inappropriate setting, such as urine marking or furniture scratching in cats. Other problems are exaggerated versions of normal behaviors that have been accentuated by indiscriminate breeding practices. A final group of behavior problems is inadvertently engineered by us. We often do not appreciate or understand the importance of environmental and social experiences on the development of behavior, or we interact inappropriately with our pets, sending incorrect signals of leadership and understanding. For example, a dog growls and snaps at a stranger. Its owner, in an attempt to calm the dog, pets the dog and speaks soothingly to it. The dog, however, interprets this petting and soothing as praise, thereby reinforcing its aggressive behavior. Fortunately, it is often not too late to intervene and rectify at least the majority of these problems. A little understanding goes an awfully long way. To understand what behaviors to expect from a particular type of pet, what drives these behaviors, and how to re-direct them resolves many of the species-typical behavior problems. It is also helpful to attend to the pet's psychological and physical needs through attention to exercise, diet, and various environmental factors. Communication with the pet can be enhanced through modern non-confrontational training. Attention to species specific behavioral needs (such as a bloodhound's need to sniff or a sheep dog's need to herd) is a must. In addition, specific behavior modification practices can be of enormous value, in some cases augmented by targeted pharmacological therapies when genuine psychological problems are involved. Medical causes of behavior problems are becoming better understood and these problems must be diagnosed and treated appropriately if other strategies are to be successful. The bottom line is that now, at last, something can be done to correct most behavior problems. A new breed of veterinary and non-veterinary specialist has emerged to help advance the science of animal behavior studies and to educate others in the art. A number of referral centers have opened up in private practice and in academia. The clinical services they provide can and do help in dealing with hard-to-treat behavior problems. No longer is there no place to turn. There are very reasonable alternatives to euthanasia that are likely to meet with success, whatever species is involved. It is quite foreseeable that within a few years the currently overwhelming dilemma of animal behavior management will come under control - and not a moment too soon. The cavalry has arrived!

  9. Resolved Question: 24yo that wants to go back to college. How do I do it?
  10. 19 May 2008 at 1:53pm
Hi, I am so lost about how to get back into the college world. I need my high school guidance counselor again! I have been out of school for 5 years. I completed my freshman year at Rutgers University in NJ and then left. I really want to go back now that my financial aid will go under myself. I am recently unemployed after working a manager's position for 2 years and figure this is the perfect time to go back. Do I need to transfer my Rutgers credits (even if the grades were not that good), or can I start over from nothing? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am considering a degree in veterinary medicine and I know this is 8 years of work ahead of me and $ is limited. Thanks!

  13. Resolved Question: PhD in Veterinary Medicine opportunities?
  14. 17 May 2008 at 3:07pm

  15. Resolved Question: Best books for alternative veterinary medicine?
  16. 17 May 2008 at 3:05pm
Can anyone tell me what some of the best books on alternative (meaning holistic, homeopathic, organic, etc.) veterinary medicine are? I'm looking for books that cover natural feeding, use of supplements, and alternatives to conventional medicine in companion animals. I know there are a lot of informational sources out there, but I wanted to know what you would recommend. Websites, journals, magazines, articles, and books all welcome. Just tell me what you recommend and why!

  17. Resolved Question: Biodegradable cat litter?
  18. 17 May 2008 at 3:02pm
Alright, so I've read about it, read reviews about it, but I want you to tell me about it. I currently use Arm & Hammer Multi Cat Clumping litter, which works great! Minimal odors, clumps great, and I have never had the problem of my cat not using his litter box. But... I want to be more eco friendly. As an advocate of integrative alternative veterinary medicine, I feel as though I should find a litter that works as well as my clumping clay pollutant with all the advantages of the wheat/pine/corn based products on the market now. So tell me about your experiences with different cat litter or even automatic cat boxes. Swheat Scoop? Feline Pine? Yesterday's News? Worlds Best Cat Litter? With everyone natural feeding, is anyone out there using a natural cat litter? Or is clay still reigning supreme.

  19. Resolved Question: Careers with animals?
  20. 17 May 2008 at 10:09am
Animals are the reason i live, and I really want to work with them as a career when I am older. I have seriously considered veterinary medicine, and while I'm pretty sure I could get in if I set my heart to it, I just don't know if that is the lifestyle I want. What are careers with animals that I can use a lot of education (I am one of the top students in my high school) besides veterinary medicine? In many ways I would love to be a professional dog trainer, but I feel like I need a more intellectually challenging job, if you know what I mean...

  27. Resolved Question: canine peri-anal hernia?
  28. 10 May 2008 at 12:46am
Is there anyone on here who knows anything about veterinary medicine? I have a very small 10wk chihuahua that weighs just shy of a pound. She has a large peri-anal hernia. The vet said she is too small for surgery. But she has issues defecating. He said soft foods and fiber, lots of fluids. I also give her a few drops of prune juice once a day. She eats about a quarter of a teaspoon of canned Iams puppy food every 2-3 hours from 6am to 10pm. He suggested possible euthanasia due to the size of the rupture and the small size of the chihuahua if defecating continues to be such an issue. Is there any alternative? And how successful would a repair be on a very small dog? The vet didn't know if it would even be possible to net the hernia.

  33. Resolved Question: Looking for guidance relating to study and application?
  34. 5 May 2008 at 6:56pm
    # 1 - Study - I know that some institutions offer tests to help you determine what you'd be good at. Do you know of any websites that offer these tests? I'm having issues because I feel like I should go to school for something I have a passion for (veterinary medicine, anthropology, marine biology), but I'm really good at arguing (showing people different perspectives, etc...) and writing, so my mother thinks I should be a lawyer or a writer. # 2 - Application - I also want to know what kind of jobs I can acquire by studying these things...I don't want to work in an office. I am driven and am the type of person that can make a great contribution to society...if I had proper direction. Any information that leads to the satisfaction of my life's dreams will be rewarded will one billion dollars. *with one billion dollars.

  35. Resolved Question: Why are people against horse slaughter in Amer. when its c...
  36. 3 May 2008 at 11:05pm
I recently read in the American Journal of Veterinary Medicine that they have significantly higher numbers of neglect and abuse cases since the closing of slaughter houses in the US. They said that this combined with our economic downturn is seriously hurting the equine industry and there are no homes for horses who would have been slaughtered to go to. We all know horses are inhumanely slaughtered in mexico - my question is how can we as horse lovers and Americans say we're proud of sending horses to be murdered across the border when they were being humanely processed without pain here in the US? I don't understand how people can react emotionally and then do nothing to support it. None of the orgs fighting to stop slaughter have enough funds to provide care for the horses that would have been slaughtered nor do they have the ability to raise the funds. Can someone explain this to me? I hate that horses must die too - but its a sad fact of life - sometimes slaughter is necessary. Brain - horses are slaughered as meat animals or to go into products like dogfood / cat food. I ride / own / and love my horse - but it looks to me like this movement is a bit extreme. If you can outlaw someone slaughtering horses for human consumption then how long until hamburgers and chicken strips or even omelets are illegal? I understand it's really difficult for some animals lovers to see horses go to slaughter - but i personally don't see why we think sending them to Mexico to be stabbed in the spine until immobile and then processed (alive or dead) is superior to the human system we had working in the US

  37. Resolved Question: Why can't they save horses with broken bones?
  38. 3 May 2008 at 9:34pm
I would think veterinary medicine is advanced enough to save a horse with one or even two broken legs. Why not?

  39. Resolved Question: Japanese translator, a good career choice?
  40. 3 May 2008 at 10:26am
I've been considering more and more about my career choices since my time to graduate is drawing near. Just recently, I've stumbled upon the idea of becoming a Japanese translator. I also want to study Veterinary medicine, so I was thinking of taking both a major in Veterinary Medicine and Japanese literature. But, before I make a final decision, I would like to know if choosing to be a translator is really a good idea. It would help if someone could give me their opinion.

  45. Resolved Question: How to get Teacher recommendations for veterinary school?
  46. 28 Apr 2008 at 4:14pm
I am currently a sophomore in majoring in biology in order to pursue graduate studies in veterinary medicine. In order to apply you need to get letters of recommendation from a few professors, but I have no idea how to go about doing this. I am contemplating asking one of my comparative anatomy professors this semester, but I'm not sure if I should wait for another professor later when I'm a junior or senior, or if I'll be able to go back to this professor my senior year and still get it from him? Any Ideas?

  47. Resolved Question: Have women caught men up?
  48. 28 Apr 2008 at 11:54am
"...there are many scientific subjects where women undergraduates and postgraduates are in the majority: In medicine and dentistry, there are almost 30% more women than men. In subjects allied to medicine, there are five times more women than men. In veterinary science, there are three times more women than men. In agricultural sciences, there are over 25% more women than men. And in the biological sciences, there are over 40% more women than men. It follows that what we mean when we talk about a gender gap often comes down to two subject areas only. At the last count, there were about 11,000 more men than women studying the physical sciences. That looks like a big gap, but 8,000 of the 11,000 difference are attributable to a single subject - physics. And in a few of the physical sciences - like forensic science - there are actually more women than men. I applied to ASU and was accepted to the Pre-Vet program because that is what I thought I wanted to do but now I realize I want to do something completely different. I plan to teach english in Japan after college so I do not need veterinary medicine anymore. Can I still change this? When do I change it and how?

  53. Resolved Question: Is anyone experiencing grain mites in dogs eating Beneful?
  54. 23 Apr 2008 at 3:20pm
Our 2 dogs recently got very ill with grain mites from eating Beneful dog food. A call to Purina resulted in an apology without accepting responsibility. Their representative stated that he had never heard of this problem before. We have seen others who have posted this grain mite issue before and wonder if anyone else has contacted Purina and what the respnse was? The dog food sample was analyzed at a university that teaches Veterinary Medicine with the result proving that grain mites existed throughout the sample.

  57. Resolved Question: rabbies shots are bad for the animal.what should be done?
  58. 20 Apr 2008 at 10:04pm
Concurrent 5 and 7 year challenge studies, being conducted according to USDA vaccine licensing standards by Dr. Ronald Schultz, began at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in November 2007. Veterinary vaccine manufacturers are not required by law to provide long-term duration of immunity studies in order to license their product, only studies that demonstrate that they confer immunity for the length of time indicated on the label. Thus, rabies vaccine manufacturers are allowed to license 3 year rabies vaccines as 1 year vaccines despite studies proving that the rabies vaccines confer a MINIMUM duration of immunity of 5 to 7 years.by law im suppose to get my dog a rabbies shot ever years.when its not good for the, dogs have died, mood problem, list goes on&on... i know there is a one year shot and a 3 year shot depending on what the vet gives them.but it last at least 5 to 7 year. so they dont need it.so why is it a law.when it should 5-7 years..

  59. Resolved Question: How much do you rely on a veterinary technician at the vet...
  60. 20 Apr 2008 at 6:43pm
You may not realize how much they can help you and your pet. Many veterinary technicians have specialized education, experience and some have obtained certification or licensing. Veterinary technicians are required to maintain hours of continuing education to maintain their certification/licensing. So they are current on the latest trends in medicine just as your vet is. Did you know that it is the veterinary technician preforming the dentistries and anesthesia on surgeries?

  67. Resolved Question: Veterinarian Schools?
  68. 16 Apr 2008 at 6:51pm
Well I'm starting college next year at University of Findlay, and although I have a ways to go before I need to think about actual verterinary school, I still feel the need to learn a little more. I've heard it's easier to get into a Veterinary school in other countrys than in the US, would you say this is true? If so why? If you get your doctorate in veterinary medicine somewhere outside of the US, do you need to take some sort of test in order to practice in the US? Thanks for help answering these questions.

  73. Resolved Question: How is this for a scholarship essay? Feel free to offer ad...
  74. 15 Apr 2008 at 7:05pm
Ever since I was a young boy, of ten, I have wanted to become a veterinarian. I guess you can say that is my dream. I have always adored animals. I had two dogs Shadow, who passed when I was six, and Midnight who just passed recently. I have been to the vet with my dogs many times and have seen, first hand, the type of work that veterinarians do. This is why I wish to pursue a college education at the University of Connecticut, so that I may one day become a veterinarian and be able to assist in keeping people?s pets healthy. One issue, however, for going to the University of Connecticut is money, which is why I need this scholarship. If I am able to go to this college my major will be animal medicine pre-veterinary category. I love to be around animals and I really would enjoy how happy people are when their sick pet is healed. I do realize that it is not all this easy; there are many challenging tasks to being a veterinarian. I would have to deal with the people who come to put their pet to sleep and I would be the one putting their pet to sleep. This is where people skills come in, which I excel at. Through my education, I will mature as a young adult and I will gain much more knowledge, not only in my field of veterinary medicine, but also in life. My education, which will ultimately lead to me becoming a veterinarian, will benefit others and me in many ways. Pets are a very important part of people?s lives and both the pet and the owner benefit from veterinary care. In addition veterinarians can also protect against zoonotic diseases, which can transfer from animals to humans. I too, can benefit from being a veterinarian. I will develop many close bonds with both the animals and their owners. In addition to this, I will also develop even further my people skills. to the person who said thnx ill steal this, you cant because this appication is for a specfic work where my mom is and only kids of employees can get it. to the other person thanx for the advice i shouldve posted the question too, they wanted to know why i want to pursue a college education and how my education would benefit others and ME.

  77. Resolved Question: Going to university in Germany???
  78. 10 Apr 2008 at 8:20pm
Ok I'm a college student in the U.S. at the moment & I'm majoring in pre-vet. The only thing is, I also want to major in German Studies and spend this fall (and possibly the rest of my college education) over in Berlin to get a real experience. But I'm pretty sure I want to be a veterinarian so I don't know how that would work... would I be able to go to vet school in Germany?? Because I don't want to live in the U.S. I'm hoping somehow to live in Germany eventually. So if I studied veterinary medicine at a German university, would I be allowed to get a job as a vet in Germany?? Or would I not be allowed to because I'm not a German citizen?? Any help would be great! Thank you!

  79. Resolved Question: Tufts University vs. Cornell University?
  80. 7 Apr 2008 at 9:03pm
for a student wanting to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Also wanting to become a wildlife veterinarian on African sanctuaries. True. The only thing is that Tufts has a wildlife hospital, whereas I'm not sure if Cornell does. Well, does this sound like a student who would be accepted into Cornell? * PLENTY of animal experience * All advanced courses * Excels in math, science, and English * Drama, Yearbook, Global action and Awareness, Newspaper, Honors Program, NHS * Habitat for Humanity * 3.75 or so GPA during sophomore year * A teacher who is an amazing person I'm hoping to have write me a recommendation letter. * English Festival * At least 8 electives * Summer programs involving school and college I am only a sophomore, and /am/ going to add more to my plate soon. * also treasurer in drama.

But later when I talked to him, he said "Hel helped it along" and then charged me for the euthanasia. I also never saw the x-rays that he also charged me for!!
