    You might remember Ronan Sharkey taking us into Cowra Abbatoir. Well during that show we got a call from Associate Professor David Watson. David is a biologist and works as associate professor in ecology at Charles Sturt University. He runs a 12 acre farm near Albury in Southern NSW where with his partner they breed and kill their own animals. Dave reckons the whole life of the animal is important when it comes to the ethics of eating meat. He says the factory farm system puts too much strain on the environment and mistreats the animals. And that's why he kills his own animals. Michael Atkin went along for Hack to watch Dave slaughter a goat. And a graphic warning on this story. It might freak you out.     pThe kind and gentle folks at a href="http://www.daytrotter.com"Daytrotter/a caged Mountain Goat John Darnielle at this year's SXSW long enough to have him record a couple of covers and two unreleased originals, now up for the internet's consumption. On our fave of the batch, "Pinklon," Darnielle indulges his fascination for '80s-era pugilist Pinklon Thomas with an ode named in the boxer's honor. John explains:blockquotePinklon Thomas is my hero. He was one of the best heavyweights of the 80s and his jab was described by many as the best since Sonny Liston’s. The line on him has always been that he was addicted to heroin at ten years old, and that he did time for armed robbery when he was young. My own research suggests that the former is certainly true but the latter might have been an embellishment on the part of boxing commentators looking for an angle. Read my a href="http://www.sfbg.com/entry.php?entry_id=6581catid=107"review/a of Benga's span style="font-style:italic;"Diary of an Afro Warrior/span.br /br /F-E did manage to make it to two shows Sunday June 22, 2008, but not without a last-minute DJ fill-in gig for my man a href="http://www.myspace.com/blovesf "B-Love /a the night before at downtown watering hole a href="http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/45218206/san_francisco_ca/cantina.ht ml"Cantina/a. br /br /The cozy bar's pan-Latin theme was well-suited for ForwardEver's soul, broken, afro-Latin and hip-hop beats. It was a night where Quantic, Willie Colon, Roy Ayers, Q-Tip and Antibalas rubbed shoulders on the Technics decks. The song that really brought the house down, though, was definitely a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=qGuLqe-NMKg"Tarrus Riley's "She's Royal" /a -- a tracks that was shamefully underplayed on American urban radio. Guess the message is just too damn positive. br /br /The next afternoon was spent basking under eucalyptus trees in a href="http://www.sterngrove.org/"Stern Grove/a taking in the US debut of Nigerian artist a href="http://www.myspace.com/seunkuti"Seun Kuti/a. Fela's son did not disappoint covering both his father's hits ("Suffering Smiling") and his own album's excellent tracks ("Many Things," "Na Oil"). He opened the show with a convincing version of "Don't Bring That Shit To Me" and his solos were earth-shaking. For one, every member sings and plays and instrument, they even swap instruments and leads several times in a song. Two, they perform an album-perfect version of each song before breaking away into improvised dubs, acoustic versions and reprises. Plus they actively explain their tracks' meaning and intentions -- no mystery or hiding behind veiled patois for MH -- they're lyrical narratives are clear. br /br /Excellent four-part harmonies, spirited but brief soloing and a solid 90-minute set add to their already golden reputation. Forget seeing Steel Pulse or Third World (both fine bands) for the umpteenth time. Morgan Heritage need to be at the top of your reggae concert list.br /br /All in all, a grand b-day week done ForwardEver style, regards to all the friends who came along for this ride...
